Important information about what Legal Setu does — and does not — do.
Last updated: May 2026
Quick summary: Legal Setu provides legal information in plain language and connects you with verified, independent advocates for professional legal advice. We are a technology platform — not a law firm.
1. We are a technology platform, not a law firm
Legal Setu ("we", "us", or "our") is operated as a technology platform that provides AI-generated legal information and connects users with independent, verified advocates enrolled with State Bar Councils in India. Legal Setu is not a law firm, does not employ practising advocates, and does not itself render legal services within the meaning of the Advocates Act, 1961 or the Bar Council of India Rules.
2. AI-generated content is information, not legal advice
The responses generated by our AI assistant, the explanations published on our blog, and the templates produced by our document generators are intended to help you understand Indian law in plain language. They are not legal advice and do not create a lawyer-client relationship between you and Legal Setu.
Specifically:
- AI responses may be inaccurate, incomplete, or out of date
- The application of law to your individual facts requires professional judgment by a qualified advocate
- Statutory provisions, case law, and procedural rules change frequently — particularly with the 2024 transition from IPC/CrPC/Evidence Act to BNS/BNSS/BSA
- The AI cannot represent you before any court, tribunal, or authority
3. Lawyer-client relationship
When you book a consultation through Legal Setu, you enter into a professional engagement directly with the assigned advocate. The lawyer-client relationship — including all duties of competence, confidentiality, and professional responsibility — is between you and that advocate. Legal Setu is not a party to that relationship.
The advocate is solely responsible for the legal advice they provide. Legal Setu's role is limited to facilitating the introduction, preparing a non-binding case brief based on the information you share with our AI, and processing the booking token.
4. No guarantees of outcome
Legal outcomes depend on facts, evidence, applicable law, the relevant forum, and the discretion of courts and authorities. Legal Setu makes no representation or warranty — express or implied — that:
- Any legal strategy, document, or course of action will achieve a particular result
- A document generated by our platform is enforceable in your specific circumstances without stamping, notarisation, or registration as required under state law
- An AI-generated notice or letter will be accepted by the recipient or by any court
5. Document generation — what we draft, what you must do
Our document generators produce templates based on standard clauses drawn from Indian statutes such as the Indian Contract Act, 1872; the Transfer of Property Act, 1882; the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881; and the Indian Stamp Act, 1899. The drafting is legally sound, but enforceability requires the user to:
- Pay the correct stamp duty for the state where the document will be used or registered
- Obtain signatures and witness attestations as required
- Notarise the document where the law or the counterparty requires it
- Register the document where registration is mandatory under the Registration Act, 1908 (for example, rent agreements exceeding 11 months, sale deeds, gift deeds)
Legal Setu does not file, register, or stamp documents on your behalf unless explicitly offered as a paid service.
6. Jurisdictional limits
Legal Setu's content focuses on Indian law and is intended for use within India. Statutory references, procedural timelines, fee schedules, and limitation periods may vary by state. The platform is not designed for foreign legal systems, even where Indian citizens or entities are involved.
7. Not for emergencies
Our service is not appropriate for emergencies, time-critical filings, or situations requiring immediate court representation. In an emergency — for example, an arrest, a threat to personal safety, or a same-day court hearing — contact a local advocate directly or call the police helpline (112) or relevant women's helpline (181).
8. Third-party references
Links to government portals, statutes on legislative websites, and external resources are provided for convenience. Legal Setu does not control and is not responsible for the content, accuracy, or availability of third-party websites.
9. Use at your own risk
Information on this platform is provided "as is" without warranty of any kind. To the maximum extent permitted by law, Legal Setu disclaims all liability for any loss, damage, or claim — direct or indirect — arising from your reliance on AI-generated content, templates, or any communication on the platform. For decisions that materially affect your legal rights, finances, family, employment, liberty, or business, consult a qualified advocate.
